Why is it so slow?

My pc used to be lightning fast and then i formatted it. Now it is slow as crap, and just a lot slower then it was before the format and reinstalling of xp. Any ideas about what is causing it. I've cleared out the spyware and teh cookies.

Did you reinstall the motherboard drivers after the reformat? And the video drivers? Both new versions, not the super-old ones that shipped with WinXP? And you reinstalled DirectX9.0C?

Yea id go with a lack of up to date drivers. Out of date video card drivers slowed my system to a crawl when dragging windows about the screen once so it might be the same for you.

I would also account all the spyware/viruses if you didnt update to sp2.

check task manager for programs throttling ur cpu up.

Make sure all the drives are running dma mode like they should be....

What actually is running slow for you?? Everything?? Just feel slugglish all around the desktop..opening things...running things, etc???

pretty much everything. IE takes a while to open, word is kinda slow, and switching between opened apps takes a while.

Youve probably already done this but just in case you havent check to see what programs are running and check their CPU usage's and the amount of memory they use. If somthings running with 99% CPU usage then youve found the problem 😀

Hoo boy.

Go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for the chipset it has on it.

NVIDIA-based motherboards use the "NForce" driver package.

VIA-based ones use the "4-in-1" driver package.

I don't know what SiS and ATI use, but your board manufacturer's website should point you in the right direction.

If you don't know who made your motherboard or what chipset it has, go buy a Dell right now. 😛

I know which drivers they are, but should i use the CD that came with my mobo or go the manufacturers website. It's an ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe. All i see on the download page is the drivers.

I think i figured out the reason. I went into the BIOS and disabled the onboard audio. When i first built the pc it was going screwy and apparently it was because the video and audio drivers were clashing. So when i disabled it, everything got better. Looks like its working, but i don't know why it didn't show up till now. Oh well. Back to Far Cry, Rome: Total War, and HL2.
