Why is it so slow viewing pictures in remote desktop?

The picture isn't necessarily that big, 1024 x 768 with a file size of 248k. Yet when viewed through remote desktop it loads the picture up in chunks. Move the picture slightly and it has to reload the picture block by block again. If you accidently open a very large picture the session becomes pretty much useless.

Why is it so slow but viewing folders with many files still feel snappy?

Viewing folder lists remotely only has to update the text names of the files (a few black and white pixels). Viewing images requires a full update of the entire desktop area pixel by pixel. That can take a while on a slow connection.
