Why is it so hard to install an MP3 player on Mandrake???

Ok, I'm a total linux noob but everything was going great with my mandrake 9.2 intall other than the fact that the MP3 player that came with the KDE desktop was kinda flakey (skipped a lot).. So I download XMMS rpms and did an install.. It needed like 6 different packages to be installed first! I got frustrated after the 12th conflict and then download ZINF - same then! Needed 3 packages or so, tracked them done.. Installation was supposedly a success but I couldnt' find the installed software anywhere! I searched everywhere.. So then I reboot into gnome and tried their built in MP3 player - played everything about 10% too fast! So the singers sounded like chipmunks!! I know that it's my fault for being a noob but why do they make software installations so difficult? Shouldn't packages include all the necessary fils, the same way windows installs install all necessary drivers/dlls?

I have Mandrake 9.1, and if xmms was not already installed by default, it was on one of the CD's.

Click "K / Multimedia / Sound" xmms should be there - if not -

Click "K / Configuration / Packaging / Install Software"

In search, type "xmms", it will/should ask for one of your CD's.

Done, at least thats how I remember it.

Having a look at Mandrake's site here -
XMMS 1.2.7 is a premier audio and multimedia application that supports many sound and video formats such as MP3, OGG and MPEG-video.

You can even grab Winamp 3 default skin and use it for xmms. I did this for my wife so she wouldn't find it confusing, it looks and feels just like it did under windows.
