Why is it so hard to break up a riot?

I was watching the riots on TV last week and I don't get why it's so hard to break them up. Police have all kinds of shit at their disposal
-tear gas
-pepper spray (works great!)
-beanbag guns
-rubber bullets
-paintballs
-loud speakers (sound stupid, but try rioting with 200db of sound destroying your ears)

Despite all of that, it took something like 4 days to end? Why?
 
Because their country is chock full of pussys, that's why. They were even scared to use "the water cannons" on them. Oh noes! Not the water cannons!

Honestly, that was it. There were simply too scared of somebody getting a scratch or injured.

All it will do is temporary quell the riot while fueling the fire and further cementing in the rioters minds that they are right and they will only want to escalate further.

It's unfortunate. Several buildings were burned down during the riot and that's arguably a bad thing. Fire kills people more often than water cannons 😉
 
By the time the police can estimate the extent of the riot.. most the damage will already be done.

And they can be unpredictable.

They have freaking cameras EVERYWHERE. They knew exactly what was happening and where.

There have been articles stating that they focused most of the police force on protecting the olympic areas.

yeah. when you try hard to not hurt people, of course it's hard to get a hyped up and barely rational crowd to obey.
 
They probably don't want to do permanent damage to people that just got caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time is my guess.

The reason it's hard is because a mass of people act much dumber than a person. If it's you and another guy and the guy next to you gets shot dead you're probably going to stop what you're doing. If a mass of 100 people and one guy gets shot dead the group as a whole isn't nessacarily going to stop and might decide to try to rip the gunner limb from limb.

So you have maybe 5 boss rioters surrounded by 100 people who are crying, vomiting, and gasping for air. The ones left standing are shot with bean bags, rubber bullets, and paintballs.
 
They should announce on a loud speaker that if people don't stop, lethal force will be used. If they don't stop, start chuckign grenades. Make this a standard. After a while people will listen.

the effects of teargas dissipates in a matter of minutes, so only the sissies will go home.

Sure, because rioters all have access to gas masks, shields and all sorts of other defenses. Send in one team of hardasses with dogs and water cannons and authorize whatever force is necessary and the riots end. Period. These animals are rioting because they know they can get away with it. Once you take away their sense of safety 99% of the rioters run home to mommy.

Whenever one of my cities in Medieval/Rome Total War rebelled, I just exterminated the population and problem solved. Kinda can't do that nowadays...
