Why is it so hard for me to pick a video card.

Grrr. I have no problems with anything else, but damnit buying video cards just pisses me off.
Anyway, the situation is it's time for my V3 3000 to catch up to my 1Ghz+ Duron and all my ram. I?m a cheap bastard so I'd like to keep it cheap(ish).

Anyway, is it worth it (especially with the new HSR drivers) paying an extra $30-$50 to get a Voodoo5 5500 over a MX (specifically Hercules 3D Prophet II MX)
I play pretty much play only Counter Strike and UT and I watch a lot of DVD's. But I don't output to TV (I don't even have one :p)

I would say go with the MX, mainly because you said it yourself that price was a concern. I have personally owned the v5 5500 before and I thought it was overpriced for what I got. I also didn't like it because it took up a lot of space. It was noticably slower than my geforce ddr (from gameplay not benchmarking) but I don't know too much about the HSR drivers. I play alot of counterstrike and it already looks awesome so I can't think of a reason why I would need the v5 instead of my geforce.

Hope you make up your mind soon :)

For your needs the Radeon 32mb DDR would be by far the best choice. So your problem really isnt as big as you think it is ;). The Radeon has the best 2D quality as well as DVD support of all the cards you mentioned, and should also be much faster in 3D.

I'm not thinking Radeon because of possible driver problems, I use win2k on all my computers, and I've had some videocard driver problems (Viper II :disgust:) and I'm not wanting to go down that road again.

Well, if you don't want any Win2k driver problems, the MX is your best bet. No card other than Nvidia ones have great Win2k.

3dfx has also always had great drivers. (really whatever as long as they are not as bad as the S3/Dimond crap for the viperII)

according to anandtech, both the 3DFX and the nVidia drivers run at exactly the same speed in win9x as they do in win2k.

So now I suppose I should forget about waiting for V5's to get back in stock and just go Geforce2 MX?

This sucks :(

With 3dfx being sold to nVidia I woudln't buy the Voodoo5...

Get a GeForce2 MX, GTS, Pro or Ultra...whichever is most in your price range.

My vote goes for the V5...I love it. I mainly play Counterstike, and and with 4x fsaa, I still get framerates of 60+ w/my Ghz T-Bird. This framerate is more than enough for half-life...(not q3, but who plays it anyway)...and the 4x fsaa looks superb. I agree that upon release, the v5 was way overpriced, but I payed 145, and I think it fits the price range perfectly.

The V5 is still a valid option for current systems. You may even find some great deals really soon now.
