My point was that never before was slavery orchestrated on a huge world wide scale by white Europeans against black Africans. Much of the world's economy was fueled by African-slave labor.

Of course slavery was practiced before. Usually it was the conquering group that enslaved the conqered ones.

And slavery and genocides against races were practiced after - the Jews by Hitler's germany, the Armenian genocide.

It's just that slavery was on such a huge scale against an entire continent. We still have a type of genocide working in Africa today by the rest of the world's community.

Now that your point is clearer to me, forgive me if I overstated my response.

However, your post still implies some sort of extra culpability for European whites. Is this because of the magnitude of the slave trading, the fact that was so ethnically directed toward black people, or what?

I still hold that the European slave trade was not substantively different from slavery throughout history. The magnitude was so great, not because of some special evil in white people, but because of coincidental factors that converged at that point in history. Here are several reasons the magnitude of the European slave trade was so great:

1. Technological advances in transportation. The conquerors were able to spread across the globe, and this relates to the next point, which is:
2. Technological advances in weaponry. Never before had there been such a vast difference in the weapons of the opposing sides. Historically, technology tended to spread among societies, so one side never got a huge upper hand. But in this case, one society was able to travel vast distances, so it was more difficult for their technological advances to find their way into conquered socities.
3. Plantations, mercantile economies. Along with the technological advances, there were advances in economics which encouraged huge plantations. The increase in trade called for large, cheap labor forces.

These were not only factors, but somewhat unique occurances in human history. The convergence of these factors, while being a step towards the advancements and more civilized life we have today, also happened to encourage human suffering in the form of slavery.

That's a good question! I don't see what the problem is. They were accepting enough to adopt the religion of the slave owners that treated them so terribly, so I don't see why they can't accept that Jesus was Jewish. I have to be fair and say that it's not just blacks, it's whites too.

I dont know what you mean about &quot;extra&quot;. Wrong is wrong. There is NO excuse and was no excuse for slavery practiced by Europeansagainst black Africa. The Society of their day was wrong - purposefully unenlightened.

I am not making excuses for more ancient slavery, either. It's just that Europe had come through a Renaissance - en enlightening of humanity a cherishing of freedoms that were purposefully denied slaves.

Here's a little food for thought. I am Christian...Roman Catholic to be precise. Why am I Catholic? I am Catholic because it is the only thing I have ever known. When I was young I was taken to church and taught all about the bible, Jesus, and God. Through my years in Catholic schooling, it was pounded into my head that Jesus was the only true Son of God, blah blah blah. Recently I have been giving serious thought to the idea that the only reason I am Catholic is because my parents were Catholic. And they are Catholic because their parents were, and so on, and so on. But what if I was born somewhere else, what if I was the son of my Jewish neighbors, then what. I wouldn't be Catholic. And I still wouldnt have any more choice in the matter. I think faith decisions are pushed on the youth too early. Give kids time to make their own decisions, and help them along the way by giving them a larger knowledge base with more choices than you ever had. (Just my thoughts, dont mean to offend any devout follower of 'x' religion).

You know how roman-catholic or morman are subreligions to christianity? like there are some things that a morman follows, that a catholic would not agree with...Well believe it or not, christianity is a SUB RELIGION of jewdaism(sp?). Just like the jews do not believe that christ was a savior/prophet/depends on beleif, the catholics do not believe in some morman practices.
