I hope it's not too hard. I'm probably going to be moving to Southern California in a few months and I'll be in need of a new job...

The crap is, I have a 4 year apprenticeship with a "special" school, so that I could go to the University. But I know a buttload of guys who just work as Computer Engineers to make big money and don't know jack about it, that is what pisses me off.

I hope you don't work in IT or Computers, because it is rough as all hell out here. I was at a job fair, and there were PhD's in CS who wanted $15/hour support jobs.

I've had a job for a year, but I was unemployed last year from April to November. I really only spent from June to November looking, but it sucked. I feel your pain. I was just lucky that I was able to mooch off my parents for that long.

There is no lack of jobs. There is a lack of effort to find a job.

If you are going to limit yourself to just one occupation you might as well quit gipping as that happens to every occupation at some time or another.

I want to work in the computer industry cuz I grown up with computers, and I want to work computers, I never wanted to go into the IT sector cuz of the money. When I was 7yrs, I already knew that I wanted to be a computer engineer. I suck at mechanic stuff. So what would you recommend?

Try Manpower or another job placement service. Granted it will not be a lot of money and probably no benefits to start, but you will be working and gaining experience that I guarantee will help you get that tech job you want when opportunity knocks.

The key is not to limit yourself. A 'Can Do' attitude will work wonders.

There are many small factories looking for employees. Again, not much to start, but working anywhere sure beats working nowhere.

Try faxing your resume to places...e-mailing your resume typically gets it filtered out by various resume engines...when you fax, there is a good chance it will pass through human hands

If there is a phone number attached to a job description, try and call up unless, of course, for some reason it requests no phone calls or it is a long distance call. Try to ask some questions. Hopefully, it will become a full conversation and they will be interested enough to ask you to interview with them.

Well, at least it worked for me twice. I interviewed yesterday and will have another one Monday because I called the employers' numbers listed on Monster.com. Granted, I only asked if these were entry-level positions. But as with anything, your mileage may vary. Well, I hope you find work soon too.

Unemployment is up and more people are hunting for fewer jobs. I know someone who speaks two languages and is graduating college with a 3.8 gpa and they just got turned down. I consider myself lucky for having a job.

Try the Sunday want ads in your local paper. Tell me there are no jobs.

You are only limiting yourself if you think otherwise. You are only making excuses.

Definite lack of jobs in IT now, and you people recommending he goes to work at the gap aren't helping. That's not a job for somebody who has a real education and is trying to form a real career. At some point you may need to resort to that to make ends meet, but it's a last resort. If you've got some guy who was making $70k/year in some weird profession and it's taking him a while to find work, he's not helping himself by working for $9/hour at the frigging mall

yes and no...
there is a shortage of good jobs. if someone graduates college with a 3.8 gpa and is fluent in 2 languages, they won't want a job that will only pay $15/hr, because they think they deserve more. if you are underqualified, it will be hard to get a job. but if you are overqualified, you should have no trouble finding a job, provided you don't mind earning significantly less than you're worth. it's not hard to find a job right now, it's hard to find a 60k a year job now.

Too 'good' to drive a truck eh? Or are you just afraid you may have to actually work for a change?;)

you know, usually your ignorance is only exceeded by your arrogance, but in this case it's too close too call.
