We're not allowed to call them users around here ... they're customers.

Because it's the only applicable verb? We use software, we use drugs. We don't use french fries, nor do we use cars. Why? Because we already have verbs for those activities. We eat french fries and we drive cars.

Just my thought, though.

... not that i would KNOW or anything

They're both called users because dealers and programmers both give the people their fix(es).

I've never heard a drug dealer call anyone a user. That word is reserved to be used by rehab administrators and therapists.
