Because we eat herbivores and not other carnivores.
We eat fish who eat other fish. We'd probably eat carnivores if they were as domestic and as cheap to feed as herbivores.

What exploitable skills do cats have? As far as I can tell, they're only out for themselves.Originally posted by: So
We (westerners) have used them as 'helper animals' -- animals that we cultivate for their skills, not for food. As such, we call them "pets" and have a cultural aversion to eating them.

what if the combination of cat meat and dog meat is the cure for AIDS, think ppl will start eating them?

Was that the point? I was addressing the question of how to classify a scavenger on the "carni/herbi/omnivore matrix".
Vultures would choose whichever carcass was less rotten. At the same rotten-ness...probably yes, a herbivore carcass would provide more fatty energy for them than a lean carnivore carcass.

Pest control for bakers, farmers, etc...
False. What is stamped in our DNA is that herbivores are a hell of a lot easier to kill than carnivores. When carnivores decide to put up a fight, they will generally hurt you ... even the "weak" ones. If it was stamped into our DNA, no one would ever think of eating dog or cat, but millions do - and it's done throughout the ecosystem.Originally posted by: yukichigai
First off, there's the "don't eat another carnivore/omnivore" thing that's stamped into our DNA. Part of the food chain and whatnot. Though I wouldn't mind trying Bear.

Because cows and chickens are delicious, while dogs and cats are not.
The reason they're kept as pets is because humans decided their other uses outweigh their use as food.
I heard the exact opposite. Someone told me that dogs are incredibly delicious. I'm not kidding.

Let's just say humans will eat anything when they're starving.

I have an army of them...any dreams you have of being 'breathless' in the night, or small round bruises on your chest in the morning are delusional.
Your DNA response was equally flawed.

Why can't they be both? And quite frankly, dogs are rarely useful unless you are a sheep herder.
WHAT!?! Ever heard of service dogs? Seeing-eye dogs? etc...?
