Why is it industry standard that Infrastructure gets a higher salary than Applications/Systems

While this is true, I don't feel that it can be the reason why the salaries are so different. I mean, you don't have to be a computer scientist (while it helps immensely) to set up servers and networks, you can graduate high school and go get some certification at the Chubb Institute.

Applications requires another level of understanding, especially n-tiered architecture. Putting a system together requires much more than setting up a unix server or applying the latest Microsoft patches.

This is purely my opinion, I am interested to see if anyone here agrees or disagrees.

Why lawyers, doctors, paper pusher, civil employees get pay more than farmers?

It is protectionism that keep them at the top of the wage scale.
