Why is it, in some older/classic books . . .

I've seen that before... but usually only in books that we were required to read in high school. Classics and the like. And I don't know why. Maybe it's just their way of saying it's a fictional address without people wondering whether it's an actual address or not.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that it is just saying that this place does not really exist so just use your imagination and put something in.
