And you don't drift in wet/snow, thats just controlled sliding.. not really drifting.

That's not even "controlled sliding." Drifting is what I've always considered controlled sliding as you use the power from the rear wheels (hence why you can't drift a FWD) to control the car while it's sliding.

Sorry I should have said trying to manage an uncontrolled slide across ice.

You drift and you post on a hardware forum. I'd like to see what cars you drift in.

Wait, you think the fact that we post in a 'hardware' off topic forum that we're all geeks and drive ****** cars?

orly?

While we're stereotyping, despite the picture none of us can get chicks either..

Yep, it's either that or slow asian cars (as shown above).

Oh yes, slow asian car with a greddy turbo/greddy sp2 exhaust/hondata ecu in it... really slow dude.

What do you drive? Your mom's van?

Check sig.

Oh okay so you just like ugly cars, with crap interiors and shoddy reliability.

It's okay I'll stick with my 320hp 2700lb 'slow piece of asian crap'

According to this thread you were just thinking about getting this last week. You mean to tell me that you ordered it, installed it, and dynod it within a week. Silly ricer lies. Show me proof by taking a picture of a note with ATOT written on it next to the turbod 2002 RSX engine.

She's over rated... one of those girls that you drool over and then when you finally get it it's really underwhelming.

I was hitting it for a year and a half.

Hey, I didn't say I'd date her. 😉

Yeah it's installed and done up, it didn't take long to buy the parts because it was a used greddy turbo.

My buddy who used to have an RSX helped me do the install. I'll get pics from my parents since I'm back at school now. Heck if I bump into another anandtecher when I get home I'll pop the hood.

You can too drift a FWD. You just gotta do it in reverse! 😛

I agree with OP. A lot of stick owners think they're elite or something when in fact they are far from it. Automatics are far more practical. For commuting, downtown, and hills it's a no brainer for me. Automatics all the way. Technology is there for a reason. Stick shifting is almost as archaic as Fred Flinestone's method of getting his car to go.

From my driving experience, 9 times out of 10 cars with stick seems always slow to accelerate at the intersection when the lights turn green. Nothing to do with the cars performance per se as racers can peel like crazy. More to do with the driving habit of Joe Schmo. It takes quite a motion for him to change from 1st to 2nd gear as compared to the auto and if he's commuting from work like everyone else, he's tired, lazy and in a laxy-daisy mood. The same is true at ramps. I end up waiting for these schmos to shift to the appropriate speed. On the whole they are also louder because they rev up the engine more, do not provide as smooth a ride. For luxury cars a stick defeats the purpose.

:Q I should try that and see what happens! Or I could be like the awesome Honda kiddies and use the e-brake in my tricked out Civic.

Haha, I've never done it on pavement, just my HS band field.

But I've done the ebrake on a wet parking lot before when my passenger was sleeping. 😱 It scared the hell out of him.

I guess someone's never heard of a "Power Slide" before then, huh?

Drifting is not a science, it is an "art". There is no one way to drift. Brakes, throttle, clutch, e-brakes, or just simply oversteer - they can all be used to drift.

I got a stick Protege (slow as nail, but was my first car that I paid for myself) few months ago. After driving in commute in 2 weeks, driving manual is almost second nature to me. Sure, it's cumbersome and traffic sucks even more than automatics, but at least I'm less inclined to do things I'm not suppose to while driving. Plus, I'm much more aware of other driver and focus more on my driving, thus making me a better driver than before. If everyone had to drive a stick, I'd bet the accident rates in US would drop significantly.

Sh!t I-75 traffic going southbound into Tampa every morning (that would easily be fixed with an extra lane or two near the BBD exit, fvcking lazy FL DOT!!!) + Same sh!t traffic going north on I-75 in the evening + me + manual transmission + noose + ceiling fan...........see where I'm going?

Got my Altima with the CVT and I loooooooooove it, people riding with me are always staring the tach with this blank stare, especially if I gun it, "WHEN IS IT GOING TO SHIFT?!"

I can't wait until more car manufacturers (read: Nissan) start making their own computer controlled manuals like Audi/VW's DSG and BMW's SMG.

Manuals are more fun to drive, but they're a PITA for city driving, so we don't own one right now. I'll buy a used manual shift car of some sort when it's time for my oldest kid to learn to drive. My kids will learn to drive a manual shift car properly before they drive an automatic.
