well, when i am booting my car-puter, it takes a long time i guess waiting for a network boot file or something... i dont understand why.

during which, it shows this screen.

this is an EPIA-5000 motherboard, running windows98 lite.

since this is a car computer, i'm most interested in a fast boot. i can exit out of it by hitting the escape key. but it seems odd that it does that, and all other internet functions and such are unaffected.

any way i can stop this? i wont have a keyboard in the car, so i want to get this taken care of now...

It's trying to a network boot.

That's probably it's MAC address and it is broadcasting it out on your network hoping to get a bootp/dhcp server to give it a IP address and find a server with it's OS on it.

Of course since you probably don't have a network OS server and have your OS on the HD it can get pretty iritating.

At least that's my story and I am sticking to it.

It's your BIOS trying... Go into your BIOS and find the settings for the boot devices. Remove "boot from network" or something like that and put it in a proper order of floppy then cdrom then HD.

Hope that was what it was.

hmm... that's how i transfer files to it... i suppose i might be able to uninstall and reinstall the hardware drivers for the NIC whenever i need them... for now i'm cheating and using a CD ROM drive out of one of my other systems till i get it running solo. past that point, it'll have no way for data to get in except for ethernet.

hmm..... the disabling of the onboard nic does sound promising... i'll try that tomorrow... maybe i dont have to fully uninstall drivers, maybe there's a way to just disable em.

i tried that. i removed everything but cd rom and hard disk. i think it's a pre-OS load of the drivers that's searching for a network boot.

So even totally disabling the sound card in the BIOS didn't do it??

Is there a "lan boot" jumper on the mobo maybe?

This is a LAN boot, it is trying to contact a DHCP server to use PIX or another platform to connect to the netowrk. Normally to boot an OS over the wire or to reimage a system over the wire.
You shoudl be able to disable "Remote wak on lan" in the bios and this will go away.
