Better yet, listen to Progressive trance or house.

Digweed in Sept 1 here in LA. can't wait!!!

oh and btw F all new music you hear on MTV. Let it be rap or rock.

danny~!

PVD, judge jules and pete tong are gonna be in la for monster massive(halloween party) im trying so hard to get down there and see it

Monster Massive isn't all that great. Last one I went to was about 3-4 years ago and it had nothing but 15 year old kiddies, especially asians all E-tarded. I prefer the 21+ events. Although watching PvD , judge or pete may make up for it....

PvD will be at the Mayan at the end of Sept. go to groovetickets.com if ya interested :)

Digweed owns!

Because everyone claims to listen to underground rock which is in most cases pretty mainstream anyway. Not many people actually listen to underground rap...

How can something be underground and mainstream at the same time?

My college roommate would lesiten to the underground rock and when I came home for thanksgiving my sister was watching the same crap on MTV teen hits.

Thus your roommate was not actually listening to the "underground" rock?

I've heard countless people state that the underground is where all of the good, meaningful rap is and for the most part everyone seems to agree. Now, say the same thing about rock and you get labeled an Indie Snob. People see you as someone who thinks they are cool because they don't listen to what mainstream USA listens to. Why?

edit: My thread title disappeared

Really? I didn't know this was the case. Probably the just opinion of the lame-o's you hang around with.

No. All the mainstream 50 cent BS is stupid. Hip hop is where its at. Not rap. Look at hieroglyphics lyrics, then compare that to 50 cent's or and other rap shit.

im only 20, so im forced into the 15 year old kiddie events :( but only for one more year :) . i actually prefer the desert partys so much more then massives and i cant wait for 21+ events. but where else can i see pvd, judge jules, paul oakenfold and all the good dj's, it either has to be a massive or a 21 event.

Because listening to the same "underground" bands that everyone else listens to means that you're "Keepin' It Real (TM)" and not "Just Bein' A Playa Hata (TM)" - of course, this statement is best endorsed by Nike, AND1, Sprite, and Big Daddy Pimp's Gold Teeth Inc.

you know that 'bang bang', 'pimpin hos' stuff you hear on the radio? there's a whole other genre of rap that doesnt focus on that stuff. if anything, it pokes and laughs at it, all at the same time discusses topics pertaining to politics, life, love, social agendas and issues, etc.

try cunning linguist - takin the loss
or benefit - 'proceed with caution' and 'a page in hip hops diary'
or something from mos def

also "Dying Nation" by Cunninglinguists and a bunch of songs by Tonedeff. And ofcourse anythign by MosDef and Talib Kweli and some songs by Canibus. Binary Star and Jurrasic5 is good too.

I made a thread long time ago with relevant verses from underground rap songs but no one showed any interest. I love Mos Def's music and tried to share my enthusiasm with ATOT, but no dice.

Don't worry. Trying to get people to listen to hip hop if they don't already like it is an impossible task. Hardly anyone's open minded about it.

The Good List
Mos Def
Talib Kweli
Common

can't really suggest universally good hip hop because everything else is so niche that only certain people will like certain artists, but here's some of what I like:

Eyedea
Atmosphere
Aceyealone
Binary Star
Danger Mouse & Gemini (they're getting more famous, DM did the Grey Album, and I've heard some samples of his stuff on adult swim promos recently)
Murs

I like underground hip hop and underground rock. I also like underground country, underground electronic music, blue grass and all sorts of eclectic sh!t. The thing is, though, it is easier for underground "indie" rock to get into the mainstream. Modest Mouse was underground for a while, but now they are huge. Same thing happened with grunge, punk etc. It's just the way the music industry is set up. The modern American music industry appeared with rock and pop, so it gets more attention and is easier to put into mass circulation. They know how to turn edgy underground rock into mainstream fodder because they have been doing it since the beatles. Underground hip hop, distinct from mainstream, has only been around since De La and Tribe. Before that it was just hip hop.

I find it interesting that the crowds at the live shows i've been to have been predominantly white.

Agreed. Also donning flame suit before saying this: Del is overrated.

Other good underground: J-Zone, and Slum Village.

Sorry to get nostalgic, but nothing beats the early and mid 90s for hip hop: The Pharcyde, the Fugees, Nas, Jay-z (pre-Jiggy era), Biggie, EPMD, Tribe, Wu-Tang, Tupac, Alkaholiks.

I might listen to rap if: 1. I could hear it over the bass. and 2. If I could understand it.

Classic Rock ownz anyway...

I wouldn't say it is necessarily easier. Modest Mouse was able to get into the mainstream because they are not Modest Mouse anymore. Compare Good News.. to The Moon & Antartica (one of the best albums ever, imo :D)) or Long Drive.., HUGE difference. Were they to release TMAA 2 you would not be seing MM on MTV and they wouldn't be on the charts at all.
