Why is it cool to listen to underground rap but not rock?

It seems that whenever someone brings up the tired rap = cRap bit, others chime in with how only the mainstream rap sucks. I've heard countless people state that the underground is where all of the good, meaningful rap is and for the most part everyone seems to agree. Now, say the same thing about rock and you get labeled an Indie Snob. People see you as someone who thinks they are cool because they don't listen to what mainstream USA listens to. Why?

edit: My thread title disappeared 😕

Because everyone claims to listen to underground rock which is in most cases pretty mainstream anyway. Not many people actually listen to underground rap...

because rock carries over similiar messages, so whether it be mainstream or underground, its going to get mass appeal either way.

in the case of rap, only discussions of ho's, guns, and diamonds, plus poppin' off bottles of cristal sell albums, because youth strive to live and be like these guys who are showcasing that kind of lifestyle.

Because if you listen to rock you're not interested in beeing cool, pimping or whatever. You just enjoy the music for what it is.

Hardly. All rock is not the same, but all mainstream rock unfortunately is (gross generalization, sorry). Once you get past MTV and ClearChannel you can see that there are hundreds of subgenre's of rock, and thousands of bands that really have a genre all to themselves. And to say that all rock carries over the same messege is ridiculous. The problem with most mainstream rock, just like rap, is there is no message. Instead of bling bling you have absurd lyrics put there just for the sake of having lyrics in the song. Yeah 99% of the sh!t you hear on the radio has the same message (or lack thereof), but dig a little deeper and you'll find some great stuff.

Lol, ok.

The people who listen to rock have just as much of an image problem as the people who listen to rap. Instead of bragging about hoes and money, you listen to sh!t that you think makes you sound or look tough. Hell maybe you don't, and maybe the rap fans don't either. Lots of stereotyping.

i agree with you on that the lyrics are there just for the sake of it. its been a little while since ive heard some good rock acts, id be interested if you could name some of the better ones that do not get any or little airplay. i mean, when i was young, pearl jams 'ten' was an awesome album. but now, i havent seen/heard anything that even closely resembles a complete and well-done album like that. i look at the billboard charts, and the top songs are by bands like godsmack and linkin park and nickleback. if thats whats passing off as good rock these days, then please seriously enlighten on some of these better acts, as id like to explore this genre deeper again.

because commercialism sucks. they are just trying to make money, hence no 'substance' behind the music.

mainstream is boring and unorginigal thats why i dont like it. you can like whatever you want, thats the great thing about music. its just that mainly the people who think the mainstream thats out now is 'bangin' and 'hot' dont like it because of the substance, only the image. and we all know image is nothing and thirst is everything

Yeah, well the street style pimps just seems to be more "in" these days. Actually I listen to underground rock and rap, so I guess I'm just trying to be REALLY cool 😛

(oh BTW rock here is supposed to be metal 🙂)

you know that 'bang bang', 'pimpin hos' stuff you hear on the radio? there's a whole other genre of rap that doesnt focus on that stuff. if anything, it pokes and laughs at it, all at the same time discusses topics pertaining to politics, life, love, social agendas and issues, etc.

the strokes.

they are good but they are also mainstream, their CAN be a balance. perl jam had it yes, its possible, but now its getting harder and harder to find good music on the radio, you now have to dig in places like the internet.

linkin park sucks, so does nickleback and hoobastank.

theres an ever changing face of music, theres not gonna be another perl jam, you just have to listen to the new stuff and decide what you like.

Side rant but halfway on topic is people's unwillingness to listen to instrumental music. Most of my favorite rock bands do nothing but instrumentals, and my friends always tell me they don't like it because there are no "words" in there. Jeebus. No fvcking "words" huh?

thanks for the suggestion.

my point is that the 'ten' album was pretty solid throughout. im tired of these 'filler' tracks and such. it seems that artists feel they can make a hot single or two, then just crap on the rest of the record, because those singles are gonna push sales on the album.

How can something be underground and mainstream at the same time?
