Why is it called UT2003 if it comes out in 2002?

why did they name it Unreal tournament 2003, instead of UT2002?

why do they call the crop of cars that come out in the last quarter of 2002 the 2003's??

I imagine that if you bought UT 2002, and in 2 months it's 2003, then it won't seem quite as "new". They'll probably have more sales next year by naming it 2k3.
