Why is it called Thunder and Lightning?

And isn't it JUST Lightning since the Thunder clap is part of it?

Yeah, but you always hear the thunder whereas you don't always see the lightning. You can see a thunderstorm without actually seeing lightning. You might only see the lightning if the storm passes very close.

because lightning & thunder sounds stupid.

like cream & peaches sounds stupid.
etc.
Bad example....there are usually more peaches than cream...the cream is kind of a condiment in that dish....therefore it's second. Saying Cream and Peaches would be like saying Ketchup and French Fries.

For the Thunder and Lightning...You are totally right. Write your congressman and see if he can do something about it.

Why the assumption that what is sensed first should be mentioned first? What is the order is "least threatening to most threatening"? In that case, "thunder and lightning" makes sense.

Well if you speak English you'll notice that "thunder and lightning" rolls off the tongue smoother than "lightning and thunder." That's all it is.

Since when do you see lightning before you hear thunder? More often than not, I hear the thunder before I see lightning as a storm approaches my area. Fortunately, I don't live where the land is flat and covered as far as the eye can see with corn or wheat. I actually have nice landscapes to view. So, yes, I hear the thunder, then I look up and say, "look, a storm approaches!" Sometimes, the storm will pass to the north or the south of me and I never see any lightning. So, that's when it's just thunder. Of course, this is balanced out, especially on a hot clear summer night when all I see is the flash in the sky from some distant storm storm or other phenomenon that creates "heat lightening." No thunder accompanies the flash, thus, it's "just lightning."

Oh, and if I recall correctly, there is a form of lightning in the upper atmosphere where there simply isn't enough air for there to be thunder... Something to do with the ionosphere or something... you can google the science sites for it if you wish.

Why do you park in a driveway, and drive on a parkway?

Why does our nose run while our feet smell?

Why are motorcycle riders called bikers, but bike riders called cyclists?

Not every thread has to be about sports, and this title is pretty damn clear.
