Why is it called football when you have people bashing each other rather than using their feet kicking the ball ? Head towards Europe or Asia and they call soccer "footbal" which I think is rather sensible.

All the Americans on this board are gonna play football with your behind for asking this!

But it is a legit question.
Probably sounded better than CarryBall, or ReceiveBall. and kicking of the ball does start off all games! (and end some of the most exciting ones :) )

And why is there a sport called "badminton"? It's not bad, and it's not minty.

Don't even get me started on "cricket".

You're right, its completely retarded... they should call American Football "Soccer" here and call soccer "football"

It's called American football, not football.

It is based on football (or soccer as some people like to call it, fools). Rugby (another game based on football) is actually Rugby football. It originated in a place called Rugby.
American football is based on football, and originated in America, so it is American football, like Rugby is Rugby football (and you have the Rugby football union and Rugby football clubs).

Basically, it's football because it can't be called American (unlike Rugby, which can be called Rugby), because American means something from America, whereas Rugby is a place name.

That's what I reckon anyway.

Good Question,

Maybe it had something to do with the early football teams never passed so they carried the ball by "foot" to advance it.?!?

Because American football developed off of soccer (football to the rest of the world). The story is that in the 1800s a game of football (soccer) was being played and one of the participants picked up the ball and started running with it. This eventually evolved into American football. The original American football looked much more like a rugby ball than it does today. That was changed in the early 1900s with the invention of the forward pass.

Well, after you received a thorough beating for starting this thread, people will say you got a good ol' fashioned ass kicking. But, you won't have actually been kicked in the ass. We will focus on your cranium, instead.

dont say coin toss

kickoff?

so why isn't basketball called jump ball?

The question was why its called football if they hardly kick it. Well they start everygame with a kick. Every score is followed by a kick and the half is started by a kick.

Comparing to why other sports are called what they are is not reasonable. They didnt create each game at the same time and then say "OK lets name them now"

Because americans, who stole the name from a sport that does involve frequent kicking, find the spelling easy :)

Because when they tried to play football back in the old days they $ucked so much so they decided to carry it around on the field instead, but the name stuck.
