why is it called Black Friday?

Might just be urban legend, but I heard that it's when retailers make up most of their holiday sales, hence they will be "in the black" on the ledger sheet.

I would say thats a good meaning.

Yeah always thought being in "the green" was positive for finance, then read some articles and books and realized that being in the black is the terminoilogy. I still can't get used to it though.

it sounds so negative.

I take it you've never worked retail. Either that or you're one of the freaks who actually enjoys getting up and standing in line in the bitter cold in front of a store at 5:00AM. Or possibly you're from a 3rd world country and have no notion of american con$umeri$m. In any case, despite the nice little "positive" platitudes about retailers moving into the black, it really is the worst shopping day of the year...

Actually, it's just because that is when they start to make money. The busiest shopping day of the year is now the Saturday before. The day after Thanksgiving has dropped to the 4th busiest.
