Why is it bad to play games in a dark room?

So Why is it? I hear about people saying it's bad to play games/watch movies in a dark room and yet we do it when we watch a movie at the movie theatre. Even anand says this in his Dell monitor article (the new article). So why is this so?

I've never heard its bad to play games in a dark room either. I do it all the time. Makes the image stand out more, and it enhances the mood for a number of games.

This probably originated from the tale that it is bad for your eyes to watch TV in a dark room - which is untrue. Lamp makers invented this story in an advertisement, back in the `50s, i think it was.

I'm accustomed to having a small shaded lamp on across the room whether I'm computing or watching tv, and for whatever reason I've become accustomed to it, and it makes my eyes uncomfortable to do without, although I'm perfectly capable of enjoying a movie on the big screen whilst in the dark, hmmm....

Eye care experts agree: Watching television will not harm you eyes or vision if the TV room is lit properly and if you follow a few viewing tips.

I don't think the movie theaters are too well concerned with the health of your eyes as they are with providing a decent movie experience.
