i was trying to check the power consumption of the E6850,
to see how it compares to the Harpertown Quad Core's,
which consume about 80 watts.

no info about that, but when i looked at the same spec
for the E6700, i found what may be obvious to a lot of
AT-ers.

the 6700 is about $320, the 6850 is about $280.

who would buy a 6700 ? someone who's already got
a system with an old motherboard, and doesn't want
to look at products that twice as fast, and about the
same price & power consumption ?

i'm wondering what a fly on the wall at intel Corporate
marketing would hear about the 6700.

i feel like the 6600 & 6700 were some of the best
products Intel ever made. the prices for the 6700
make it seem like it's being discontinued.

I think they stoped making 6700 line or at least don't make them anymore, so supply demand thing. Just like DDR is now more expensive than DDR2 even know DDR2 runs faster.

They still are.

6700 has a multiplier of 10 - much easier to overclock, even if you have to change it to 9.

Essentially the same CPUs, like the E6850 and E6600, with the multi of 9, but different FSB.
