Why is Indian food mostly chicken? No fish, beef or pork?

Most of the dishes you see at Indian restaurants are actually quite easy to make. The trouble is in gathering the ingredients 😛 We cook Indian food daily in our house, 5 people on a rotationary basis and some of the stuff is very good🙂 Our menu includes Tandoori chicken, chicken briyani, chicken makhani, chicken curry etc. Indian food is unbeatable in many aspects 🙂

don't know about pork or fish, but the cow is sacred to the Hindu, they aren't suppossed to eat it. Of course american restaruants do make beef dishes but that is to appeal to american tastes

You get plenty of fish and beef dishes through out india.

Pork, although available pretty much everywhere in India, is pretty concentrated in areas like Goa and Mangalore. From Goa you get the the various specialties like Sorpatel (sp?), Pork Vindaloo etc.

there's also lamb as in lamb vindaloo. now that's good eats(though very spicy 🙂 ). but i would guess it's a combo of scarcity of the species of animal and religious prohibitions.

EDIT: chicken makhni rocks!

there is a lot of lamb/mutton in indian cooking. there are fish dishes at most indian places but i haven't had any of them. the north eats more meat than the south (which is predominately vegetarian) but the south is where the sea is, so maybe that is why.

Most of the indian restaurants in US are north Indian cuisine, which for the most part do not have fish. ( they do have lamb and chicken though) For fish, you have to look for cuisine from Goa or Bengal.

I cook Fish curry, fish tandoori as well 🙂 Pork is not really eaten in India (except as someone mentioned in Goa and some other parts) plus pork is kinda hard to cook since it takes longer time to tenderize. Beef is also available only in high profile hotels in India though it is eaten in predominantly Muslim parts of the country.

They eat goat as far as I know.. at least in Trinidad they do. Chicken is just cheap. My mom makes beef curry all the time, because she is Catholic.
