Why is home plate a different shape than the rest of the bases?

The bases are in fair territory, that's the shape that will allow home plate to fit in the corner of the baselines.

On a related note, why do hot dogs come in packages of 10 and hot dog buns come in packages of 8?

If you bought bun length hotdogs then you would get 8 hotdogs to go with your 8 buns.

Yes, and the reason its not square like the others is that it would be even more difficult for the umpire to declare a strike zone if home plate wasnt square across the front.
