What's happening to iGoogle?

iGoogle will be retired in 16 months, on November 1, 2013. The mobile version will be retired on July 31, 2012.

How did you come to this decision?
We originally launched iGoogle in 2005 before anyone could fully imagine the ways that today's web and mobile apps would put personalized, real-time information at your fingertips. With modern apps that run on platforms like Chrome and Android, the need for something like iGoogle has eroded over time, so we’ll be winding down iGoogle on November 1, 2013, giving you a full 16 months to adjust or easily export your iGoogle data.

What will happen to the data stored in my gadgets?
All of your personal data stored in other Google products will continue to be available via those products, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Finance, Google Docs (now Google Drive), Google Bookmarks, and Google Tasks. Other gadgets, like the to-do list, allow you to export your data - look for the “Download all” option under the drop-down menu tied to the title of your list. Most iGoogle gadgets are created and maintained by third-party developers. If you’d like to export your data, you should contact the gadget creator directly.

I really like iGoogle -- are there any other alternatives?
On your mobile device, Google Play offers applications ranging from games to news readers to home screen widgets.

If you’re a fan of Google Chrome, the Chrome Web Store provides a similar range of options like productivity tools and applications to check the weather. In addition, just like iGoogle, you can personalize Chrome with a theme.

None of that negates using iGoogle. None of that is applicable to me. Stupid. :(

I faintly heard of it, but that's about it.

About time they get rid of Google video though. Seems to be redundant to run two separate video services.

Google video is good too since it aggregates videos from all over. Youtube is just videos people have submitted to youtube.

Yep, especially since they started including pr0n in its search results. I will miss it.

This does indeed act as a reminder that if you rely heavily on something, it's always best when you host and manage it yourself. Especially free stuff, can be taken away at a moment's notice when the company decides to.

While very unlikely, imagine if your main email is a gmail and they decided in the future to pull that off too, or make it a pay service.

I'll need to find an alternative - this has been my homepage since its inception.

If any of you DO find an alternative, please post it! It's been my homepage since it came out also. :(

I think they should have just renamed it. And perhaps a fresh re-theme for appearance.

If the functionality of if were integrated into google+ then we'd have something.

I tried it for a little while when it first came out. I was pleased that it showed me everything I put on the page, where I placed it. The problem was I never used it, and it slowed down the home page spawn. It's not very useful.

Damn, I had no idea until I read this, just looked at my iGoogle home page and sure enough there's the pop-up notification.

I'm going to miss it. I just subscribed to a ton of RSS feeds of interested and filled my iGoogle with a bunch of google reader widgets.

This is how mine looks.

For you guys that use it as a feed reader, Thunderbird makes a good feed reader, and you can manipulate your mail with a real interface, setup the way you like instead of using the noobed up webmail.

That kinda sucks. I've used it as my home page for years; it's nice to be able to see various news headlines, weather, Gmail, and whatnot at a quick glance.
