Why is everything in the USA censored?

I've just been watching, among other things, Kitchen Nightmares and Breaking Bad episodes recorded from prime time American TV. Why are swear words in US TV shows always censored? Aren't you adult enough to take it? Why doesn't it piss you off that your government is telling you what you can and can't watch/hear?
