Why is everything I download coming out corrupted?

Hi.

I have AT&T internet (I don't know the details - I moved in with some friends who have been having this problem for a while). The router is a NETGEAR and here is the following stats:

Account Name WPN824
Hardware Version V2H1
Firmware Version V2.0.26_1.2.17NA

Now I noticed the other day I couldn't update my virus scanner after I set up my PC. I chalked it up to a weak wireless signal issue. Then I found my laptop (which has much more mobility than a desktop obviuosly 😛), right next to the router, could not update definitions. I thought the servers were down and went to bed.

Now the next day I went to update WOW on my desktop as its been about three months since I turned it on. Same problem. It would not update! Errors in downloading.

Then I got a new wireless card, and found out that the drivers on the CD are junk and don't work. I proceed to the website to get new drivers, but every time it is done, the file comes out corrupt. I'm SO confused as to what is going on. then I go to their desktop -- connected through a WIRE, and tried to download the drivers. It didn't work.

I was confused...out of no reason I tried to connect to work using a cisco VPN client...The download came through perfectly without an issue at all! I was perplexed.

Later I spoke to the guys to figure out what is going on, and it turns out these guys can't download anything! They (and me!) can use the internet just fine...as long as they download nothing. Its amazing, because their virus scanners are all atleast a year old when it comes to definitions (how scary). i asked them how they got ANYTHING to work....turns out they use E-Mule + Limewire + all that junk I won't touch lol.

Now I updated (or so it told me) the router's firmware (see the beginning of this poll).

I tried to see if it would work connecting the modem to my laptop directly, but it wanted me to install AT&T software, which i'm entirely unwilling to do lol. Then it hit me - downloading through their P2P programs work, and using Cisco Client worked for me...none of those are port 80.
Is it a port 80 issue? Would it even make sense? Why would this corruption happen? Like I said, I can use the internet fine, but downloading anything is fruitless as the file always comes out corrupted.

Any ideas? I'm raelly confused as to what is going on.

P2P software does a CRC check on packets to make sure what is sent gets to the other end intact. If its corrupt, it gets resent.
VPN can do CRC checks as well so that might be why it works.

I can't say what would cause what you are experiencing, maybe a bad nic .

It isn't just a NIC:

Its wireless traffic from 4 different computers
Its wired traffic on two different computers plugged up to different slots on the router (I've tried all four combinations, all have these problems)

I think I'm going to have them call AT&T and get their butts over here so they can fix it. I was just hoping I could figure out what is going on my own.

I would imagine that it's probably your router and nothing to do with AT&T. You'll need to verify by bypassing the router.

Also, you don't need to install any software to connect to their modem directly. Most now come with a basic NAT router built in to them that will provide DHCP to your computer, and if they don't, Windows XP can establish a PPPoE connection on its own.

First thing that I thought of was somebody screwing around with the router and how it handles port 80 by running a background script. I've seen scripts that reverse images (mirror or negatives) on webpages for clients connected to the router that are not on a list (MAC list for example). I'm not saying that is the problem, but it seems similar to script kiddies playing with routers from other forums/threads.
