Why is everything $*.99?

Everytime I see a price, it's always $29.99, $9.99, or something else with $.99. Why not just go to the next penny?

It's an advertising trick. It makes people think the item is cheaper ($1.99 vs $2.00).

Because an item priced at $29.99 will always outsell the same item priced at $30.00. Sure you can argue you look at $29.99 as $30.00, but talk to anyone in retail. $*.99 always wins.

It's simple retail psychology. Same reason why bright colored boxes have more draw, the word "NEW!!" will always attract attention, etc. Consumers as a whole are stupid cattle, and companies make use of this fact.

Actually, it dates back to when Sears was THE store to get everything. They started moving towards odd prices like that so people knew they had change coming back and would make sure the cashiers would give them the correct change. Apparently they had problems with shady cashiers slipping a couple bills when the price came out even and the people wouldn't notice.

Over here in Britland Most things are either £x.x5 or £x.99. I very rarely see anything charged out of that standard. Maybe things are different on the other side of the channel?

Uneven pricing got it's start because R.H. Macy wanted to force his cashiers to make change to discourage pocketing of cash. Before that, no one priced their goods this way.

Nope, it was started by Macy's. But you got the reason right :)

I can buy that it was Macy's, my memory might be going in my old age (I'm 18), lol

I call my bad memory selective alzhimers, I remember what I think is important and forget the rest. It works for me, ignorance is bliss.
