I mean, come on!! You folks get an invitation to Gmail and you'd think that someone slipped a "1 Free BJ" redemption card in your mailbox.

How many people need 1GB anyway???? And don't we all already have email accounts????

Feel free to flame :D

All I know is that paid Yahoo! subscribers -- and I think that covers SBC Yahoo! -- now have "virtually unlimited" e-mail storage capacity on their accounts, which was apparantly done to compete with Gmail. I like that. I think I'm going to start backing up my 120 gig on my e-mail account.

1GB means you don't delete/lose thing. It's searchable. It's google. Less spam.

Gmail > ISP mail.

All comparing to other free services, heck some ISP don't offer these simple things. Charter's basic web mail has none of these. Doesn't apply in every case, just a lot.

If your running your own mail, don't bother comparing, we know it's better...

edit: how many people *try* to use e-mail as 'storage'? Now they can, or can do it better with 1gb vs. whatever they have now (10mb?).

I Think becuase initially people thought "oh boy I can send/receive illegal files... 1gig of space is more than enough to trasnfer ISOs and such between freinds and family...."

Gimme a break.

GMail is way WAY over hyped. I ahve my own domain and seldom even use that email.

because farm loving grandma from kansas doesn't know she can get firstname@lastname.com for as cheap as $20-$25 per year. even if she did, i don't think she will bother as @gmail.com is pretty easy to remember and gives plenty of space for her to keep emails from her grandkids for years :)

Because it's 1GB of storage for a web email account. You ever try saving lets say 500 emails on a webbased account and try looking for a particular one? Thankfully i discovered that you could use Outlook and set up a hotmail account which i download to Outlook, then move my mail to the appropriate folders (ie passwords, personal, business, receipts, etc)... which allows me unlimited storage and search function.

Don't know... I use two hotmail accounts and a domain account (james@garrin.net) which is my first and last name.

yeah, but only when you're at your computer. if you're anywhere else, you're stuck. i do the same as you, but now i'm slowly migrating all my email to gmail so i don't have to decide what's important enough to keep online and what i can move offline.

If attachments can be any size, I wonder if there's a limit to the amount of bandwidth used? Say, if you and 30 friends wanted to share 200 5MB files (pictures or something), could you all know the password, and email them to the common email account? Thus, you could use it somewhat like a server?

Iwould guess a lot of folks want to get the name they want, without a bunch of numbers after it.

Freebeer@gmail.com, something like that.

All the decent names are taken at yahoo, and hotmail.

great or not is really just a matter of preference. i tend to like gmail's interface more than any other webmail.
