Why is everyone so anxious to get a gmail account?

Someone... explain it to me. I just dont get it :(

For $2-3 a month you could have your own email address @yourowndomain.com with just as much space and no advertisments in your emails.

because it's FREE :p

Because it's from Google

and it's 1GB, which is unprecedented for free :p

Failing this, refer to #1.

I don't know why either. Scan my e-mail and place ads randomly inside it? No thanks.

Go and search your couch. You're bound to find a couple dollars each month.

3*12= $36 dollars a year. It's really not hard to understand.

And no ads are worth that much to me. The reason I put it in monthly format is because its a smaller number = more likely to seem cheaper :p

I'm too dumb to set up my own domain with email, so I have to default back to existing solutions. And the biggest free one is a winner for me.
The advertisement part will suck though :(

Yeah, I'm not really caring about Google offering a gig of space. Personally I don't use google for anything, not to even search. Not trying to say they're bad or anything, I just don't like them that much myself.

I think how they are setting up Gmail is pretty crappy and will almost certainly never sign up for it myself. They are doing the same thing that Gator or other adware does, they're only getting by with it because they get people to willingly sign up for it.

If you think you are too dumb to get a domain with email feel free to PM/IM me and I'll try to prove that wrong ;)

I have gmail and so far I'm pretty impressed with the features. It is pretty much on par with the other mail services in terms of free features. Best thing of all I don't get any spam in the mailbox yet.

Seriously? I know how to register a domain (obviously) and find a provider, but after that I would be clueless. Not that I couldnt figure it out, just take a few hours of reading and stuff. Do they provide the email software in your account?

Why pay for something when you can get it for free? I personally don't even care if they do target ads towards your e-mails. I'm not a privacy buff like most of my friends if it doesn't include my personal information (cc#, SS#, DOB,...).

***Edit***

Maybe because I've been using gmail to send large attachments, but I haven't even seen any ads yet.

They provide you with a link to a control panel like webpage where you setup an email in a few easy steps. Then you click on a link and that configures your outlook or outlook express with that email address. That's it.

I just dont like not having access to things other people do... I hate secrets, exclusive clubs or whatever. If someone else can get it and I can't, I want it.

plus maybe some people want to get their handle @gmail.com before its snatched up. How many tries did it take to get that hotmail address you wanted? hell with just my first and last name there were already 51 other accounts like that and I had to get first_last_52 or something like that

oh but I was recently lucky when I tried signing up for michael@marijuana.com and lo and behold its mine :) much better than gmail.com for vanity's sake

It all depends on the upload/download rate.........if it's low enough they can easily give you 1Gb of space.

I don't want ads that are being targeted towards me because it has scanned my mails, then I would rather pay for a decent service.

Is it up yet? I did send them an e-mail when it was announced, and haven't received anything yet...
