I have a setup of Sparcs running OpenBSD and a few PC's running FreeBSD and Linux, i know what you are talking about.

If you are into Linux and get the time, ArchLinux is a new i686 distro, i have had KDE3.3 for a month.

The install is text based but after that it is just to fire up the console and type pacman -S whaterveryouwanttoinstall and for a complete upgrade of all installed packages you type pacman -Syu.

I like it except for the init scripts, but that is because i am used to slack/BSD init style scripts.

Pretty easy to follow and the new layout makes it extremely useful to me.

Fastest system i have ever tried is Arch with Ice on this computer.
