Mainly due to the compatibility issues with the Live and Via 686B (ok .. I forgot the number:eek:).

I still like the Nomads :);)

or their crappy rom drives..
or their live series cards.
what about the platinum slash (/) emu-rip off w/ overpriced but crappy software bundle
could be their atrocious capitalist-scum style business ethics (see aureal)
or...

Oh yeah ... I hate my godammodafokastupidbitchaxx 32x CD-ROM drive. It reads 1 out of 10 CDs, and when it does, make a HORRIBLE grinding sound. :|:|:|:|:|:|:|

I used to live by the mantra that soundblaster was it for sound and not much good at anything else. I have to now modify that since hercules game out with the gametheater XP which far surpasses any creative card.

They killed off Aureal! Loudass motherf*cking CD-ROMs! Incompatible and inferior-sounding sound cards!

Incompatible? Please elaborate.

Inferior-sounding? OK.

Aureal killers? Hmmmm...I had an MX-300 and loved it. But nvidia had more of a hand in their fate than Creative.

Slow to release drivers? Yep!

Bloatware? Yep!

Built-in copy protection via SDMI in their next generation sound cards? Yep and this isn't good as rights "removal" via SDMI is far too vague and all encompassing.

I admit I've never liked Creative Labs much ever since they flooded the market with dozens of soundcards and killed off all the other good manufacturers (like Media Vision, for instance, who made the Pro Audio Spectrum, and Gravis, and Adlib, and Roland....) simply through a campaign of convincing people they needed SoundBlaster cards just because they had the best marketing team in the biz. Now that all their competitors are gone, they haven't relased a new sound card since the release of the first SoundBlaster LIve card two years ago. Sure, there's all the X-Gamer, MP3+, and 5.1 crap, but *it's all the same card.*

So why do I own a Creative card? They do have a lot of support in games, and I thought they had the best quality of sound until I started reading reviews of the TB Santa Cruz and listening to owners talk. Do any other cards like the Hercules GameTheater or Santa Cruz have S/PDIF out like the Live cards? I was planning on getting a new speaker system either this summer or next, and I wanted digital audio in the form of S/PDIF, but I'm not aware of any other cards that support it and are designed for gaming and not professional stuff.

please tell us how nivida killed Aureal and not creative. creative sank them with all the frivalous lawsuits. aureal paid $6M in defending themselves. aureal also hurt themselves by wasting too much money. one of their employee benefits was onsite massages. i think the aureal engineers going to nvidia was more of an effect than a causation.

anyway, i'm in the market for a new computer. what is recommended soundcard to get these days?

Currently my choice is the Herc XP gamer. Much better than any live though I'm not quiet sure if it was better than my SQ2500.

nvidia??...i don't think so.

and there's no question the sq2500's aureal vortex2 chipset is better than the CS 4630 chipset (herc GTXP) for gaming...
that is, if the game supports a3d.

turtle beach santa cruz, abit au10 (and other fm801-au chipset, more feature packed - i.e. including digital in/out, ac3-pass thru, etc.), and accoustic edge are other far-better-than-live cards...the santa cruz and GTXP probably being the favorites with good reason

I dislike Creative because firstly their products aren't all that great, secondly they have released the same card what is it, 6 or 7 times now?

Live!
Live! Value
Live! Platinum
Live! 5.1
Live! X-Gamer
Live! MP3

I can remember 6 off the top of my head which are essentially all the same card, with new additions or different software packaging. Kinda pisses me off that they market these as though one is better for mp3's, one better for games, one better for movies, etc.

Yup, creative is known for screwing consumers by not innovating in their new products:p They dont do anything until they are forced to. They were also almost a monopoly in the early days of soundcard.. you pretty much had the choice of creative, or pc speaker:p Sad how Microsoft saved us with direct sound etc:p Now anyone can make a card that works with most anything. Course creative still churns out crap... years after aureals superior tech came out creative has yet to release an equal product:p They are all about marketing.

thats why i don't like creative much.

The Cru, Edge and Herc are just starting to get the reputation they deserve. Amongst the "in" crowd their sales will suffer.

nvidia stole/headhunted much of aureal's employees. So if creative fired the first volleys and damaged the aureal ship, nvidia's sinisiter underwater assassins rigged explosives on their hull and sank the Good Ship Aureal. :(

i see creative as the cheap company that gives the little subwoofers on their speakers, the company that makes you pay extra for a software bundle!! GRRRRRRRR!! i got fooled... Damn the only difference between value, x-gamer, and mp3+ is the SOFTWARE!! SCREW CREATIVE!! damn i got fooled, i got the x-gamer version of the card, i thought it would have some special game sound enhancements that were reserved for the people that had the x-gamer, but no! i just got some games that half of them i don't even like!! :|

oh yeah and they always bundle a bunch of useless stuff to make it look cool so they could attract customers to buy their junk! it's like those kids who see the free toy inside the cereal box! They don't look at the main food, they just want the addons, cause that's mostly what the customers see(well the little ones). Such as the soundcard comes with lots of good software, ummmmm im buying hardware not trying to buy software. the speakers come with the cheap stands, and they are soooo expensive. the DTT 2500, damn it costs $200 and it comes with a 5.25" subwoofer?!?! COULD YOU BELIEVE IT?! A $200 SPEAKER SYSTEM THAT COMES WITH SUCH PUNY SUBWOOFER?! come on!! Altec Lansing ADA880 that costs only 110 comes with an 8" subwoofer, a remote, bigger drivers, tweeters, and more!!

Damn, I don't know about the CD-ROM drives and other crap they sell (or why anybody would buy that junk in the first place), but the Live! Value has become the de facto standard for add on sound cards. Where the hell else are you going to get a Signal-to-Noise Ratio >96 dB for only $40.00? That's clean!

Suit yourself. Go ahead and pay as much for your sound card as your mobo, but that technology has worked fine for years. I can't imagine why "newer, better" chipsets and operating systems should have trouble with it!

other than not really updating their line of cards of drivers in two years, then nothing.

Their cards are becoming ghetto, quick. No driver updates, mounting incompatibilities, and just plain bad buisness.

Thats not how you run a computer company.
