I am curious as to why is "Eating and Drinking" considered a recreation?

I know that recreation is stuff that you do in your free time, but isn't eating and drinking more of a "need" that you must do in order to survive?

Eating good food and going out for drinks is a recreation. Coming home for dinner and drinking a Dr. Pepper is necessity, somewhat.

"Eating and Drinking" tends to mean going out to a place where food and drink is prepared for you, in some way. Eating and drinking are also two things we need to do in order to live, but it doesn't have to be at a place that does the prep for us. We don't need to drink at a bar, or eat at a fancy restaurant, or eat and drink at a pub or other combined eat/drink establishment... and it's tends to be a treat or a way to include enjoyment in the concept of eating and drinking, so it's recreation. ;)

I've heard that people can gain 20 pounds just from being on those cruise ships, thanks to the 24 hour buffets.

Anything that induces endorfin production is considered a recreation.

Having sex is also a recreational activity for many, and it's a pretty vital life function, too, at least as far as nature is concerned. Socialization is also something which is necessary for our species' survival, yet people engage in that all the time anyway.

Sex: procreation or recreation? Discuss.
You can't spell "procreation" without "recreation." :D
Or at least, all the requisite letters are there, just change the "p" into an "e." It's close, dammit! :p
