What BA said.

This thread reminds me of another fact...something like half of americans (or some other ridiculous figure) think the sun rotates around the earth. That just saddens me.

hey kami... you forgot how probably 50% of Americans think that Canada is part of the United States too.... i don't know whether Americans or Canadians should be saddened by that ;)

its not elliptical. the earths orbit is elliptical.

the earth is basically round, but a little bulgier around the waist (equator)

It's gotta do with the gravity of the earth pulling everything in, then again you could just think of it as the way God made it :)

So do I...how can people be so ignorant? I know it's not 50%...it's another number around there that I can't remember.

And it's slightly oblong at the equator due to the centrifugal force(which doesn't really exist) caused by the rotation of the earth.

so Kami, is what you're really saying that 50% of Canadians can't remember the percentage of Americans that can remember various bits of trivia? ;)

centrifugal force does exist, it just goes by a different name in the scientific community.

no, it doesn't exist. You're probably thinking of centripetal force, which is the force that acts on a body to cause its path to curve.

Did you know that the perhelion of Mercury's orbit is off by ~41.5 arc seconds per year when using Newtonian and Keplarian planetary mechanics? This was one of the first discrepancies explained by Einstein's general relativity. Wow.

its not round, the water makes it look that way, if u made all the water dissapear.. the earth would be no shape..

I probably shouldn't mention that land mass does require some sort of shape.

its something like 60+% of United states citizens can't locate the US on a world map without names and labels on it

and solar system was a nebula the particles get closer forming bigger masses of particles (the beginings of the sun and planets) then the sun which has the most mass etc. has more gravity collects more mass and condenses along with keeping other masses(planets) in its orbit. The masses since spinning want to mantain the closest distance to the center of the object (ie radius) thats why you don't have square planets....

gravity is the only thing scientist haven't been able to identify they know what it does and the basics but don't know how it works and why. And btw mr. Albert was proven wrong over the summer
i believe xeon gas was accelerated past the speed of light in a chamber at -423 degrees
