Why is .Doc format worse than Rtf??

I noticed in the recent resume thread of last week a lot of people were saying that RTF format is superior to Doc format because of formatting and style abilities or something like that. Can someone tell me what that means? You can format things with Doc files just as well I thought..

The only difference is that .doc format is a Microsoft format, and you need Word (or Openoffice) to read it. As such, you can't guarantee that the style will remain exactly the same between computers. However, since everyone has Office anyway...

.rtf is more universal, although it doesn't offer quite as many options.

Hey, MrMatt, that's an interesting and provocative question you pose, and it really got me to thinking . . . Where's the pics of your g/f that you've repeatedly promised us in the SJP thread?

Yeah, the sole advantage of .rtf is that it can be read by just about anything, and without its native formatting coming out all screwed up and looking whack and not as you intended on someone else's screen.

Businesses, for better or for worse, run on Windows and Office. As a job applicant, it's in your best interest to use a format that will make it easiest on the resume reviewers to open. In this respect, rtf and doc are equivalent because by default, MS Word will open both on a Windows system. Doc has more advanced formatting options, but you wouldn't be using too much on a resume.
