Why is diesel so expensive?

I passed by a few local gas stations in the past week and noticed that while gas is holding steady at around $1.85, diesel is always about $2.23. I always thought diesel was less expensive than gasoline; is there some reason why it's more expensive all of a sudden?
 
It tends to be slower to fluctuate in price, when gas is rising diesel tend to be cheaper and when gas is falling which it is now diesel tends to be more expensive.
 

Diesel prices always rise in the fall, as demand for heating oil ramps up in the north, heating oil & diesel are almost identical & the ratio of oil diesel/heating oil to gasoline refined from crude is relatively fixed, scarcity ensues, prices increase.

Just filled up TDI Golf, 38.9 mpg in mixed driving...😀
