Why is 'corps' pronounced 'core'?

Because of it's french roots?
Plus it might be a little unnerving to be part of an infantry corps if it was pronounced like "corpse."

the english language is actually an incredibly dynamic language.... its derived from West Germanic, Celtic, Old French, Old Norse, Old Frisian and Old Saxon. That's why there are a bunch of seemingly odd spellings, (for lack of a better term) redundant word variety (however it offers a variety of stregnths of words while saying basically the same thing) and pronounciations, however it adds to the beauty and precision. Why is it "cool" to mock the enlgish language, it's beyond me.
