Why is Corel going down the tubes?

The other day, I installed Corel Ventura and PhotoPaint 8
on my machine...This reminded me, once again, how
impressed I generally am with Corel software...Works
well, has lots of options, less steep learning curve
than with comparable software, etc...

...and yet, they are apparently near death...

So where did they go wrong? They apparently lost the
fight with Microsoft Word vs. WordPerfect. They also
dumped a lot of cash into a Linux distribution that is
actually pretty slick but doesn't make hardcore LinuxHeads
happy (and I guess the problem is that most of the
Linux support base at this point is LinuxHeads...)

I can't figure out why Ventura has become an also-ran.
Seems like a very strong package to me. PhotoPaint seems
very good too. And CorelDraw is nice...

So what's the story...

I know I used to love Office Suite ... word perfect .. way more user freindly than Microsoft office !!

Microsoft is squishing them(they should spend as much energy on bugs as they do competition).

My bro recently put together a system that included Corel Paint(maybe Photopaint)for $19 cdn. My jaw dropped when I saw the price. I think Corel simply killed themselves a few years back when they slashed prices in order to compete with MS, but what else could they do?

Here you have an avid Corel user. I heavily use Corel Photopaint as my choice graphic design tool. I have created large websites using it and I really like it. It can do just as much as Photoshop with a much easier learning curve. Here's one site www.berkshirestore.com. I really like corel and I have their package since version 3. Now they are up to 10?

Does anyone know if Corel still has many developers on staff.
At the prices they're now charging, I don't see how they can
afford to pay for much development...

Again, this is really sad. So many products die a deserved death,
but the Corel stuff seems very solid, very well designed.

I was reading the other night that a couple of years ago Corel
allowed one of the cheapo motherboard manufacturers to bundle
in WordPerfect for free with their motherboards...I guess the idea
was get it on the desktop and we'll sell upgrades. But of course
once MS Word is on the desktop, who's gonna change...

I also read recently a rumor that Microsoft gave Corel some
money to stay afloat with the proviso that they stop support
WordPerfect for the Linux platform. This was only a rumor...From
MS's standpoint seems like a good idea, though!

I'm quite happy with Corel's office solutions. What Corel should do in the linux business is just releasing it's complete Corel line on linux instead of just Wordperfect (I was disappointed because of this, since StarOffice is a complete suite). Or Corel can port it's graphic suites to Linux as well.
