Why is CGI so slow? Is it possible to make it go faster?

Hi I'm running Newspro on my site. Newspro uses cgi and since I have installed this my site have been running or downloaded slowly. Note this is just regarding the main page where I have the news tough. Anyone know if there is any possibilities to boost it up?

You could try using APS pages with server side service to lower the bandwidth usage.

I'm using win98se, I have also tryed to check the speed of the main.shtm at work that uses NT4!
APS pages I don't know how that work! The host support cgi and ssi. Could you explane how APS works and what it is?

I think lowtech is talking about ASP pages (Active Server Pages, Microsoft's equivalent to PHP/CGI)

I'm assuming you're using ActivePerl to run CGI's on your 98 machine. If so i can't help you out much in this regard. However there is a .dll that needs to be loaded if it were running on Win2k Server and i'm guessing this method will work the same on a Win98 machine. It's in ActivePerl's documentation. Check it out.

Uhm I'm not running as a host at all! All files are at the host (barrysworld) the cgi script is lockated there.. So when you go to the page you will not download anything from me at all! I might misunderstand you tough!

whoops! so this is a script located on your host? in that case it seems their servers are getting overloaded and thus why the slowdown.

I've used the same script you're using in the past and never had a problem with it out of the box. Try mailing Barrysworld CSR's/Tech and tell them about your problem

he he ok I will.. but the strange thing is that the rest of the site is loading real fast. It is only the main.shtml that is slow, but everything else is fast!
