Well, without knowing more details, I'd be willing to bet that you are NOT being ripped off. Carpet has several grades or levels that you can choose from. Buying the cheapest carpet only means that you'll have to replace it in 5 years or so. Also, check what kind of padding is being installed. See if it's the 8 Lb. pad - which is a pretty good pad level right now.
A person who I'm doing work for right now, purchased 80 yards for about $2,100. It's a medium-quality carpet and the wholesaler is a guy I know, so he cut her a bit of a discount. Her previous estimate from another place for similar carpet was $2,400 for 80 yards.
Again, though, to know exactly how good or how bad your deal is, you need to compare "apples" to "apples." Sure, someone could have gotten the same amount of carpet for $1,300 - but, I'll bet it was pretty crappy carpet - from my experience. 🙂
