Why is business internet so slow?

I don't need 50/50mbps like i have at home with fios, but to pay almost twice as much for a measley 20mbps/1mbps is just asinine. Some say you're paying for the reliability and support, but their support isn't exactly 24/7 and you don't get a hold of someone right away. Just ranting and wanting to see if there's a reasonable explanation to this haha. I'm trying to download some security camera footage and it's a good 3GB that I need to get back to me.

Well with business internet you aren't throttled or made to stay under a data cap. You also won't have any ports blocked so you can run email, web, etc... servers from standard ports from behind your firewall.

I've also found the response times to fix issues is a bit better but it's nothing like a real SLA you would get if you have a dedicated circuit.

The 20/1 "business account" you refer to is something I consider and sometimes refer to as "Pseudo Business" lines. Basically you pay more so that the support group will dispatch a tech the next day vs ignore you, blame your equipment, schedule the repair in 10-14 days etc. Of course the is entirely dependent on the support techs not just being the normal residential repair people.

SLA that frowertr mentions is where the real business lines come in and they are typically much slower and much more money but you may have a 4 hour turn around to rely on etc.

They can get away with it. My ISP rolled out fibre internet years back, but they refuse to allow businesses or even appartments to have it, because all those businesses are paying ridiculous prices for T1s and SDSL circuits and stuff. If they could switch to fibre they would be paying way less.

The price difference between consumer and business internet services has more to do with the service levels offered for businesses, it has little to do with speed tiers. A business is compensated per specific terms depending on circumstances. A consumer is out of luck beyond whatever they can get complaining to loyalty and retention (which is still usually pretty good, relatively speaking).

Most businesses are served out of exactly the same network equipment and infrastructure as consumer services. The extra price really isn't coming from anything different at the network level. The exception would be if it's a bigger contract that called for dedicated equipment to be fielded specifically for that client - otherwise you're really paying more for exactly the same level of actual internet service/speed/reliability, just with the reassurance of specific compensation if they don't fix things within the agreed upon time.

Or simply the ISP is not interested in taking on the risk and service level agreements that businesses typically require.

You pay more to run commercial services on the connection. This is typically against the terms of service for residential service.

Essentially because they can run it slower, as mentioned by others here in this thread

It is even worse here, I was looking at fiber prices for a customer of ours and the Fiber business without static IP starts at 100/50($100/mth), but if you want a static IP then you are stuck at 20/15($200/mth).... both business services... how does that make sense

I had called them and they essentially said "its a business decision"

They told you that if you want a static IP, then you are stuck with 20/15 and can't go to a higher tier? That can't be right. I'd ask to speak with a supervisor.
