Isn't it just Kansas (can-suhs) with some kind of prefix ?

But it's pronounced ar-can-saw

Even more weird, the Arkansas River is pronounced ar-can-suhs River

Why do through, thorough, tough, and bough all sound different despite having the same last 4 letters? Who knows? That's just how it is.

Because the English language is flawed.

Because someone misheard a word in some Indian language and decided that it was spelled that way, then they found out the proper pronunciation later.

Ok..

so does anyone know why the state is pronounced one way and the river another?

It's not

Agreed.

Webster's

See the footnote about the River's pronounciation and listen to the wav files.

Dude, I've lived in Arkansas for six years and I've never heard "Arkansas River" pronounced that way.

You see, the schools down there are real crappy, so they only have time to teach the kids how the first 7 letters of Arkansa sound before recess...

I've heard a lot of different versions of Wichita. Washtah and Wicheeta amongst them. Depends on what state the river is in at the time, I think.
