Wasn't Sawyer Brown pretty much the biggest hit of Star Search?

Unless you count:
Dave Chappelle
Alanis Morissette
Aaliyah
Christina Aguilera
Drew Carey
Billy Dean
Brad Garrett
Jessica Simpson
Kevin James
Martin Lawrence
Dennis Miller
Rosie O'Donnell
LeAnn Rimes
Ray Romano
Sinbad
Britney Spears
Justin Timberlake
Bill Engvall
among others.

Alli's response pwns mine. 🙁

I watch American Idol for the same reason I play DDR, Guitar Hero, and Elite Beat Agents. I enjoy the music. For the audience of American Idol, maybe it's just like a big concert to them.

Maybe I don't remember quite right, but wasn't Star Search also something of a variety show? One kid would be a phenomenal singer and then next a piano prodigy? And my memory seems to have the idea that it was mostly kids on the show.

If those are accurate, they'd be more factos of why a mass audience couldn't really relate to the show.

So basically Star Search was an all-in-one talent show. Now all the networks have done is separate each category into it's own reality talent show. 😛

Not only that, but star search never had any bad people on it. That's part of the big draw to american idol. People like to laugh at the ones that do bad i think.

i think this is it

Watching people fail has become a rather popular past-time for most of America.

It is a sad state of things... People have to watch other people fail just to feel good about themselves.

I don't think its that. I think America has gotten so used to "everybody wins!" type thinking that its amazing to us to see people fail at all. Americans simply cannot handle failure anymore, to the point where its now on TV as something rare and special.

American Idol is a hit when Star Search wasn't because American Idol gives plenty of airtime to people who don't necessarily have a good singing voice. I'd rather laugh than listen to talented singers. If all of the contestants are good singers then there is no entertainment value. It just gets very boring.

Reason Star Search is not as "BIG" as AI is because of the voting and because of Simon. You couldn't have Simon on SS times, now it is acceptable for a host to be mean. Mean people are entertaining, enraging, engaging, etc.

I'd say that Brad Garrett did pretty well for himself.
And many people posted above.

umm . . . Didn't I admit that all on my own?
