I live in the San Fernando Valley... I'm using Road Runner from Time Warner. Since I woke up this morning, AIM is just dead. Just sits there Verifying name and password until it finally timesout.
 
reboot everything. also, beware of Nik and his wrong forum escapades!
anyway, try a diff program like Trillian that uses AIM (Trillian is really easy to set up - google it)
