Why is a TV screen worse for your eyes than a computer monitor?

You know how we were always told that you should stay atleast x amount of feet away from the TV and not to sit close up to it? Well what makes a monitor better for your eyes that we don't have the same warning?

From my understanding there is no basis to that old warning unless you sit with your nose pressed against the screen. I think most PC monitors now meet standards for electronic emissions.

I bet it was your mother who told you to sit back from the TV.

That warning is genetically programmed into mothers, along with:

Eat your vegetables
Wear your warm coat
Wash behind your ears
Don't forget your galoshes
If you keep doing that you'll go blind
etc.
