Why is a motherboard called a motherboard?

Supposedly there is a specific answer. I recognize that there are mother and daughter boards, but am looking for the reasoning behind the name.

And yes, it's for extra credit.

If you want to ram a fatherboard that is your choice, but I'd perfer to ram a motherboard.

Because a motherboard acts in a maternal way to ensure all the children work together to function efficiently in pursuit of a common goal, as opposed to a fatherboard which gets drunk and beats up the CPU?

I don't know, why would it be called the mothership? motherland? mother f*cker? We give the women things like this so they don't bitch about us getting all the cool father shit like TV, recliners, boats, and professional sports.

When I was first learning English, I was always confused why people called their affectionate inanimate objects as 'she/her'.

"Fill her up"
"She's a fine boat"
etc... why not he?

Because it's prone to unpredictable errors and can just be irritable at times. And instead of actually telling you what's wrong, you just get some sort of cryptic message and a string of obnoxious beeps.
