2gb sticks of ddr3 ram are affordable, but why are 4gb sticks of ddr3 laptop ram such a huge price difference??

Maybe there just isn't enough demand to warranty mass manufacturing of the 4GB variety, and therefore price remains high. I'm guessing the sticks require greater density, and packing more crap into the same size space will usually cost you more $. It should come down eventually, as it did with prior RAM types.

why is a 600hp car more than twice as expensive as a 300hp car? must be a conspiracy!

Because they have to use higher density chips to get that much memory on a PCB that normally handles half that?

4GB dimms require either a custom DIMM or higher density chips. Higher density chips are more expensive to make, and aren't made in the same volume as the lower density chips - simply because lower density is in higher demand and produce better production volumes making it more economical for companies to produce the lower density that exponentially more people would buy for a lower price than the higher density the few people would buy for a lower price.

It's called supply and demand. You should look it up sometime!

higher density = harder to make = more cost.
