Why is 480 so expensive?

The GTX 1060 is a faster card, but is about the same price as the 480.

What is going on?

Are you looking at the increased cost because of vat taxes?

If not right now the eth miners have increased the prices on them for awhile now because of how good they are at mining.

Otherwise generally the 1060 is better at dx 11 games but this comparison for dx 12 titles helps the rx 480 more and even more so if the game uses vulcan.

Can't game without a monitor. And, for me, I wouldn't game without an adaptive sync monitor.

Since Gsync is $150-300 more than than Freesync a 480 + Freesync monitor is far cheaper than a 1060 + Gsync.

This. I would think people who are doing upgrades are upgrading their monitor as well since you can get alot of performance for $200 so have some money to spend on monitor.

Rx 480 4GB: $200
256GB SSD: $60
KB + Mouse: $50
Total (w/o monitor): $510
32" 1440p HP Freesync Monitor: $325!!!!! (or I could have got the Acer 27" 1440p 144hz IPS for $400-$450)

Can't believe how good this system is for $850. Nvidia clearly is performance winner, but I'd be probably paying extra $300 for an equivalent system (mostly on the monitor, but money is money).
