<< But what if your cousin was Alyssa Milano or Brooke Burke?? >>

First cousin, third? I mean how close is she? If she is the daughter of my aunt or uncle hell no.
But if she is like that cousin you only meet at a family reunion and looks like Tyra Banks maybe;)

I wanna thank those who have given me an insight of your opinion about my question.

It still amazes me that this thread is still around. I have not been online for 2 days btw.

I think we can conclude the thread now.

I think you have to question everything sometimes...that's the *only* thing I've learned at Berkeley :)

I think this illustrates that a lot of people think that it's not really an absolute idea (it's either right or wrong) but rather that there's a spectrum of rightness and wrongness...

Me, I don't think I could handle knowing I'm even a little bit related to the person I'm dating...but that's just me

OK, first - I think you can have a sense of personal morality without bringing religion into it. Morality does not equal religion.

Does anyone here maintain that they do not have a personal sense of morality? That there is nothing they consider "wrong"? Murder? Rape? Theft?

I know many, many atheists with great morals. They hold them because they observe a human desire and need, born from our awareness as a species, to observe some actions and intents as "wrong", and others (heroism, giving, love) as "good".

We can try to deny it all we want - to try to pin it on "social norms" or whatever - but morals exist. We know that willfully killing someone is wrong. Wanton theft is wrong. etc.

Morals.

The introduction of sexual desire/ action into a family-based relationship will strike most people as morally wrong - religion or none. This is normal, this is our nature.

We naturally have a different type of love for family - one which does not co-exist properly with sexual love.

Just MHO.

I think it is important to first develop nonsexual, loving relationships before branching out into relationships that involve sex.

Sex is also not a constant in relationships... levels of desire go up and down and one must be prepared to respect that life is not just one big F-fest. Love does not equal sex, and that is what the family should model. If people acted on every single sexual impulse they had, this would be quite a messy world indeed. Not having sex with your family members helps to give you control over your impulses. People who can't control their impulses tend to be trouble with a capital T.

The family unit serves to help the individual learn about relating to others in a non-sexual way. When the family unit involves incestuous relationships, you end up with all kinds of dysfunctional behavior, mostly related to control and power issues.

I have known girls who had incestuous relationships with their fathers and brothers. Growing up, some of these girls were my friends. There are a lot of them out there, trust me. What I noticed about them was how willing they were to use sex to manipulate guys in general. They grew up seeing sex as a means of power and control and they wreaked quite a bit of havoc in their personal relationships.

If you don't believe me, just get involved with someone who has been a victim of incest. Find out for yourself just how difficult it is to deal with someone who did not grow up with nonsexual family realtionships.

Anyway, that's just my opinion but it is based on the undergraduate work I did in psychology and sociology.

BTW, here is a good place to find more info. It's really a fascinating subject. Personally, based on the research I've seen, the taboo against incest is a good one. Keep in mind that what I have listed here is Internet stuff... I highly recommend going down to your college library and cracking open a few journals there.

I was joking on the last line as indicated by the;). Now if the female is a family member then having sex with them is wrong and that's that.

The fact is that sex education in america is ridiculously lacking. And it is not just sexual education. People often react to something seemingly aweful because socieity tells us that is not acceptable. Our parents and teachers, also a byproduct of that influence, tells us that. The truth is that there is no such thing as "normal" behavior. Who is normal? Who is to decide what is normal? Media? Government?

Don't get me wrong. I dont agree with incest like most of you because that's just how I was brought up. Imagine another world where incest is accepted, would you participate in incest in a world where incest is socially acceptable? Maybe. Having a hot sister wouldn't hurt either. Alyssa Milano.... yes no doubt.

Here's another food for thought question. Posed to those of you that think incest if wrong because it interferes with procreation of the species by increasing likelihood of abnormalities. If incest is wrong due to its interference with procreation then why isn't homosexuality wrong too? It should be taboo seeing as it doesn't help further the species. :Q

I DO. I think the only reason homosexuality is considered okay in today's society is because its so widespread, and unlike incest, it always involves two consenting adults. Historically incest and homosexuality's always existed, but I just think both are equivalently shameful, immoral, ungodly, perverse and unnatural.

But I guess incest is worse because it often involves chidren...

Here is an interesting twist...

You see a brother / sister couple making out. You KNOW they are bother and sister. This "grosses you out" right.

On the other hand.....the Sister / Sister couple on the next park bench making out and groping each other is hot, right?

WilsonCat - good point, implied incest is something that skin magazines make the most of. Twin sisters in suggestive poses etc.

What is also 'interesting' is that for all the social taboo surrounding incest, erotic story sites claim their incest sections have more traffic than the 'normal' stuff.

Either there are a few people who require constant fixes for their addiction or there are many people who have a sick fantasy world.

No offense to homosexuals... but if I had a sister... I would much rather do something with her than with another guy... a sister is after all.. the opposite sex. But then again I don't have a sister, so maybe if I had one my view would be different. However... one of my female cousins would definately be more attractive than a guy.

so if you had to choose between these two options, which would you choose?
1. an unrelated person of the same sex.
2. a sibling of the opposite sex.
