Why in hell is more money spent on AIDS research than cancer?

Cancer is responsible for WAY more deaths and AIDS gets WAY more money. No, I don't have the figures.

And don't pretend it's because of the AIDS epidemic in Africa, since most of the people who are funding aids research probably aren't thinking about that at all.

So why? Is it ignorance, or what? There is a great way to deal with aids: Education. Short of rape, bad blood transfusion, freak accident, etc. I have absolutely zero sympathy for anybody who gets aids in this day and age (in our society; I realize that education is just not as available in places like Africa). Yet, prevention is only one aspect of fighting cancer.

I think its because AIDS can turn into an epidemic while cancer does not... who knows realy, or that AIDS is a virus and we know how to cure viruses while cancer is a cell defect and we dont know much how to cure that so scientists and med labs see more of a reasonable goal to find cure for aids than cancer.

Politics

Also The Press, Hollywood and yeah it't true. Gay organizations promote AIDS as being a greater threat than cancer. Since in politics perception is reality, thats where the money goes, or to use an old aphorism, the squeaky wheel gets oiled.

<< Gay organizations promote AIDS as being a greater threat than cancer >>

gay organizations can have fun in hell...

i hope they all give each other AIDS...

i think its sad that something that can be prevented (AIDS) is more highly funded than cancer research... thats if you are correct 🙂

Because if AIDS gets cured, then we could do it with whomever we want and not have to worry about a thing!

(I'm kidding of course) :Q

<<

<< AIDS is a virus and we know how to cure viruses >>

Huh?
>>

we know more about curing viruses than we do about curing(sp??) cell defects.

Well Beast, ever see any Gays against Cancer rallies? It's their right to try to raise money for their cause, and the right of the people with the purse to say, thats enough.

we know more about curing viruses than we do about curing(sp??) cell defects.

Links please.

To the best of my knowledge, there are no cures for any kind of viral infections to date.

Ebola, and Polio are types of viruses - no known cure.

Sure, the political ramifications are there - but a good point was made above that everybody has ignored: HIV is communicative and cancer is not.

I.e. HIV has the potential to become a serious epidemic (keep in mind that its rate of infection back in the early days was astronomical), while cancer does not.

When HIV first appeared, it was marginalized because most of its victims were marginalized. Much effort has been made to correct this and, for the most part, it has been successful. While I question the numbers in effect here (I'm not so sure that AIDS/HIV research funding really does exceed cancer funding - if for no other reason than that there is only one AIDS, while there are many types of cancer that all have their own foundations), I think what we may have is the skewed perception that more is being done about AIDS that is a lingering effect of the effforts that had to be made to get the public to acknowledge that the disease was out there in the first place.

Isildur- True enough as it goes, but I maintain politics is the main reason.
Disease Trivia
Biggest killer? Aids? Cancer? Nope pneumonia. FAR more people die of this.
Anybody remember malaria? 300-400 MILLION new cases a year. Not a typo. Not many Malaria Day events going on. Why? Because it is not so much a problem in the US, and it's not a glamor disease.
Cancer can't be caught, but sooner or later, chances are you will get it if you live long enough. Natures way of telling you to cash in your chips.

The Have Pleasant Dreams thought
Cancer is not transmissable, but it ought not to be to hard to construct a virus that can be caught like a cold and cause terminal cancer. Sweet dreams indeed.

<< i didnt say they dont have a right to do it...

i just dont agree with it...
>>

I've always thought about this. I hear about people saying like "Donate to the hocktorhizophemeritoniosis fund. Only 3 people in recorded history have ever had it, but it's horrible and we need to find a cure!"
And that utilitarian in me sits and thinks how if all the worlds researchers and sponsors were to concentrate on one disease at a time, they'd probably find a cure in pretty short order. Well, that's not necessarily true...but at least research wouldn't be held up on account of lack of resources, and it would cut redundancy. But that old saying still holds...."9 pregnant women won't birth a child in one month."

Of course...all this assumes that the cure hasn't already been found and is just being kept a secret b/c it's worth more money to keep people sick and treat them....
MUWAHAHAHAHA! That one's for all you conspiracy theorists out there!

<<the leading cause of death world wide of young people is aids. >>

I doubt that. That isn't the case in the US, and I seriously doubt it's the case world wide, either. Accidents in the US cause over 70 times the deaths from ages 25-44.

Bottom line, AIDS is preventable, in most cases. Cancer is not.

Novon- been looking for statistics on this, can you link some? Also the the statistics for american AIDS deaths are skewed in the US reports. Shows extremely high death rates, but if you remove IV drug users, it drops to nil. Do your statistics reflect that? It's relevent since it would reflect a more realistic risk.

Beast1284

You clueless freaking moron. You feel the same way about the 6 week old baby that contracts aids throgh a blood transfusion? Or the dental patient who sat in the chair after another AIDS infected person was previously seen and contracts the desease. do you really think that all aids patients are gay?

Have you ever EVER been to a hospital to visit a patient with aids?

You are a disgusting maggot. People like you make my skin crawl.:|

Why do we spend money the way we do? Here are some interesting figures:

Basic education for all would cost $7-8 BILLION a year.
$8 BILLION is spent annually for cosmetics in the United States alone

Installation of water and sanitation for all would cost $9 BILLION plus some annual costs
$11 BILLION is spent annually on ice cream in Europe

Reproductive health services for all women would cost $12 BILLION a year
$12 BILLION a year is spent on perfumes in Europe and the United States

Basic health care and nutrition would cost $13 BILLION;
$17 BILLION a year is spent on pet food in Europe and the United States.
- $35 BILLION is spent on business entertainment in Japan;
- $50 BILLION on cigarettes in Europe;
- $105 BILLION on alcoholic drinks in Europe;
- $400 BILLION on narcotic drugs around the world;
- and $780 BILLION on the world's militaries.

Makes you kinda think.
