Why I'd buy an AMD64 CPU!

I don't give a **** about the 64-bit side of the CPU, I like the huge performace increase on the 32-bit side. That's why when I upgrade in 2 years, I'll most likely buy an AMD64 CPU!!! The 64-bit capability is pure bragging rights.

😀

I am using an Opteron at home and work now, after having a 3 Ghz p4 HT. This is the first cpu upgrade I've done in a long time and actually felt the benefits. I primarily compile and code most of the time, game here and there. I love my opteron, and as soon as XP 64bit goes gold, it will be installed.

My 2 cents.

Xeons and P4s do better in band-width heavy, 'dumb' applications, like rendering and video encoding. No suprises there.
One important thing to look at is how close the AMD chips have gotten, considering that many of these apps have P4-specific optomizations. Also there's this whole thing where the A64s do slightly better in office stuff, and gaming, though lesser there.
...and NOTHING feels faster than a dual-Opteron w/ SCSI RAID 🙂.
